Joel Aiken spent 27 years making wine for Beaulieu Vineyard before leaving to start his eponymous label. His third release of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Morisoli Vineyard, surrounded on three sides by Inglenook, is a successful portrait of both site and vintage. It’s dark ruby in the glass with aromas of tart red and black cherries, cinnamon, smoke, clove, charcoal and garrigue. The fresh, nearly full-bodied palate shows gentle tannins of very fine grain and chalk. It tastes of chewy black cherry, charred wood, dark spice, unsweetened chocolate and espresso. This is a very savory and darkly masculine wine to go with grilled steak today or evolve nicely in the cellar for 12+ years.
